The Sunday Currently #8

Hello 2015! This is my first Sunday Currently of the year (yep, I missed last week, but never mind that) and I am quite pumped! I don’t really want to join the bandwagon of putting in resolutions, and the year in review will come in a separate post. I do have great hopes for this year, and I am determined to make it an awesome year.

Holy shit, I think this is the year I’m finally getting things written down! I have started “officially” using my Moleskine planner and so far it’s working the way I want to. I’ve also started an actual written journal and a separate photodiary for some form of #ProjectLife, which I intend to put in another separate post because why not. I’m feeling good about this, and I’m beginning to get twinges of stories for the fiction that I want to write.

L’arc en Ciel is one of my favorite bands, and I am revisiting their music through Spotify. I’ve been listening to them since high school (!!) and I’ve never gotten tired of it. At the moment my favorite album is Awake.

I want to bring your attention to Spaceteam. Its blurb on the Play Store says it is “a cooperative shouting game”. If you are a fan of Star Trek, imagine you’re like a crew member with your own instrument panel on your phone screen. Prompts come up on top showing what action needs to be done or which instrument needs to be set at which level. Most of the time the prompt on your screen is for an instrument panel of another player’s. Hence you shout it at them and get them to follow it. At the same time, they are shouting back at you to follow their prompts! Hilarity ensues as you try to wrap your tongue around the appropriate technobabble such as “Set Geiger Powerlantern to 3” or “Unbind Iota-magnet”. The game will also throw curveballs such as asteroids (all players must shake the phone to avoid them) and wormholes (everyone must flip their phones upside down to survive them). My brothers and I love to play this, and I can’t wait to try a 4-player game!

Ahemmmm excuse me, the geek is leaking out.

I’ve just fallen into the black hole that is called hand lettering, fountain pens, planners, and calligraphy. There are soooo many blogs and sites that I need to read, but for now, I’m backreading The Well-Appointed Desk and Plannerisms. And finding even more stuff to read through them! On the bright side it’s keeping me inspired to further my skills.

There’s a new restaurant that opened up in my workplace. It’s called Balkan Kitchen, and it serves Yugoslavian home cooking. I’m enjoying it so far, so much that I want to try out as much of their dishes as I can in the succeeding lunch breaks.

There is always the issue of wanting to do too many things, and there’s only 24 hours in a day. I’m really hoping that this planner business is going to help me manage my time better this year, but unfortunately it seems like I’m also wanting to do even more things! I need a better way to manage my hobbies maybe. Perhaps there really is only so many hobbies one can pursue.

I find myself acquiring a lot of planner accessories (stickers, sticky notes, colored pens, highlighters, etc) more than makeup these days, which is surprising! I want to get more notebooks and sketchbooks, more markers and pens for lettering, and of course more stickers!

Thankful. As I said about two weeks ago we had our cat’s troublesome eye removed before it affects the rest of her body. The operation was quite successful, and the post-op was exhausting (for me, specifically because of all the meds and stuff she needs that I need to give; and for her, because she’s recovering). She is now finally allowed out of the crate and she cannot be happier! Five more days and the cone can come off as well, and everything will be back to normal, minus the eye!

Wet n Wild Color Icon Eyeshadow Palettes in Petal Pusher and Walking on Eggshells

As an eyeshadow enthusiast, I find it a little embarrassing that I have not yet tried Wet n Wild eyeshadows. I have heard a lot of good things about their formula, and they are super cheap and cruelty-free as well! That is why I specifically asked WnW eyeshadows as a pasalubong from my mom when she went to the states late last year. These are the palettes she was able to snag for me.

Walking on Eggshells is a very popular palette because it is neutral. I like how light it is, and that it comes conveniently stamped with where on the lid the shades are supposed to go. One is of course not required to place it where suggested, but for the lazy girl this is a boon. Being a tiny palette also means it’s quite portable.

The browbone shade is a pearl/frosty white shade that sheers down when blended. The crease shade is a nice golden brown that looks shimmery on the arm but quite matte on the lid. The eyelid shade is a shimmery metallic pink that also sheers down when blended, but the shimmer is still quite visible even on the lid.

In this look I’ve followed the recommended way of application. I’m in love with the crease shade! It’s a really great crease color and will go well with neutral shadows from other palettes. I suspect it can even be worn alone as an all-over-color. This palette is definitely a hit!

wnweyeshadows08 wnweyeshadows09 wnweyeshadows10

Petal Pusher is something that is a bit out of my comfort zone. It is made up of darker plummy colors that may not be quite office appropriate, but we shall see. It is composed of eight shades, also stamped with the suggested lid locations. I gather that the shades in each column are supposed to go together, but they can also be mixed around.

Let’s take a look first at the left column. The browbone shade looks white in the pan, but leans more dusty matte cream on the arm. The eyelid shade is a matte light lilac. The crease shade is a deep matte eggplant, and looks really lovely! I had to google what a definer is, and yahoo answers gives me: “can be used as an eyeliner or out-corner color”. Well in this case, the definer is a shimmery cornflower blue that really goes well with the crease color.

Looking at the right column now, the browbone shade strangely look pink on the pan, but is actually a very light metallic lilac. The eyelid shade looks like a brownish mauve, while the crease shade is a nice matte dark brown. The definer looks like something basic black, but has a tiny bit of glitter. The glitter isn’t really all that visible on the eye, unfortunately (used here as eyeliner).

I have not tried most of Petal Pusher on the lids yet, since I cannot wear such dark colors in the office. I’m planning to try out individual colors with my neutrals at some point, but I expect the turn out to be just as good as Walking on Eggshells. I’m really digging that deep eggplant and the cornflower blue and I can’t wait to see how they look on my lids!

And by the way did I mention the arm swatches are made without primer? The hype is verified, these shadows really perform! I’m out to get some more palettes (because why not), specifically Comfort Zone (8-pan) and The Naked Truth (5-pan).

Have you tried out WnW eyeshadows? What are your favorites?

FOTD: New Year, New Look

One of the very first things my family did to greet the new year is to have a hair cut. Yes, all three of us! We were all in dire need of a cut so we all trooped to our favorite salon (Bench Fix Lab, Trinoma) and ordered a family-sized haircut (there’s no such thing; but the same stylist did the cut for all three of us). My husband has been clamoring for short hair for me for quite some time, and I went for it!

Chopped most of it off, and it actually feels great! One of the funniest reactions I got to the cut was that they assumed something bad happened to me. Does it have to be bad to want a change? I love my new hair, and I hope you do too!

Honestly here I have not really styled it as much, and a bunch of it went its usual fly away way. This is my standard corporate look (as per usual), with the addition of some soft eyeliner. I also misplaced my eyeglasses and have to use an old pair.

It looks much better in this obligatory car shot (better lighting?), although that fly away strand is just camouflaged by the headrest. Here are the makeup I used:

Happy Skin SS Creme, Wet n Wild Color Icon Eyeshadow Palette in Petal Pusher, Daiso Eyebrow Pencil, VMV Hypoallergenics Ooh La Lash Mascara, Pixy Ultimate Cake, K-Palette 1 Day Magic 3D Palette, Catrice Absolute Eye Color in Mud Spencer and Coralle Hill, K-Palette Real Lasting Eyebrow Mascara in Natural Brown, Clinique Long Last Lipstick in All Heart

Nails: Caronia over the holidays

Over the holidays I received a nice package from Caronia Philippines, and as usual it never fails to induce me to try out the included nail polishes! Let me show you what I got.

These first two shades are the first ones I tried because they’re green! Goddess is a very muted carpet green while Lounge is a more sparkly leaf green.

caroniaholiday2 caroniaholiday3

Trance is a very sparkly violet.

Finally, Gold Rush is a very beautiful metallic gold which actually appears like a light copper. This is my favorite!

A little note about Caronia’s formula. It seems that it is much improved, as all of the above took only two coats. They dry faster than I remember too, which is a huge plus for me! Gold Rush is definitely a winner. Thank you again Caronia Philippines!

PS: Happy 2015 guys! May this year be a great one for you!

The Sunday Currently #7

Happy holidays! I hope you’re having just as much fun as possible! This year has been a great one for my family, with several new additions all at once which I will write about very soon. Right now though, will be my last Sunday Currently of 2014.

In an attempt to develop a writing habit, I got myself this nice book: 642 Things To Write About, from Fully Booked BHS. It’s basically just a book of writing prompts, but with spaces to actually write in, like a school workbook. In fact the cover makes it look exactly like that! I’m hoping that having something like this will kickstart some creativity in me.

A whole lot, but mostly work related. I like HBR publications (Harvard Business School) and I’m starting a collection of HBR books that I can use for work. Right now I have On Managing People and Negotiation, and I hope to get more!

A Parisian Winter Tale by Montblanc. A four-part short film series by a fountain pen maker which is quite apt for the christmas season. Very touching and the workmanship is exquisite! Make sure to watch all four parts, and the making too!

My brother gifted my daughter the boardgame Sushi Go! by Gamewright. It’s a pick-and-pass card game (aka the drafting mechanism) and the objective is to garner the most points after three rounds. Each type of sushi or condiment gives a certain number of points based on the number of those cards you have played. It’s pretty simple and of course my daughter loves it, but there’s a surprising depth to it!

It feels slightly disloyal, but my husband and I have started liking Saboten over Yabu these days. The rice seems fresher and more authentic, and the cuts of pork seem better overall. I’m in love with the katsudon since they serve it in a hot pot and the pork is practically swimming in egg!

I baked some cookies! As was my standard for the past few christmasses, I bake huge batches of cookies for giveaways. Alas this year I was pressed for time and was only able to make one batch of Chocolate Chunk Cookies as house gifts for the relatives’ houses we’re visiting. This is the recipe I use, although I’m not really super strict about it. For example I forgot the brown sugar in this latest batch, so instead I just added white sugar at the end of the dough mixing.

2015 is coming soon, and I am looking forward to it! It’s going to be a great year and I hope yours is too!

A bit scared. My first rescue cat, Katkat, is scheduled for an operation tomorrow. Her bad eye finally gave up (she had it since we rescued her) and now needs to be excised before it affects the rest of her body. She is very fidgety right now and I’m scared she’ll hurt her remaining good eye, so we put her in a cone of shame. Wish us luck!

Rave: SkinWhite Face Cream Powder

About two weeks ago I attended the press event of SkinWhite’s #BetterMe Campaign as well as Batch 2 of their Captivate Council. I intend to write more in detail about these two, but today I wanted to discuss one of the items I received in the press kit.

This item is the SkinWhite Face Cream Powder, a little unassuming tube that looks like some pimple cream. Upon closer inspection it was actually what they claim to be an innovative moisturizer-turning-into-face-powder product that is unique in the market today. I was immediately intrigued, and put it to the test immediately.

skinwhitefacecream1 skinwhitefacecream2

The back says:

The first and only one in the market, SkinWhite Advanced PowerWhitening Face Cream Powder uses a unique technology that amazingly transforms from a moisturizing cream into a light, matte powder when applied onto skin.

It uses an exclusive Advanced Tripower Technology that safely attacks the three stages of melanin production:

  1. Blocks UV rays from entering the innermost layer of the skin.
  2. Suppresses melanin production.
  3. Prevents release of melanin to the uppermost layer of the skin, preventing skin darkening.

It also has Vitanourish Formula that contains Vitamins B3, B5, B6, C, and E, SPF12, for intense moisturization and protection from harmful UV rays.

This product uses Synchronized Whitening action through multiple actives to ensure you achieve your beautiful blush white skin.

Quite a lot of claims really, but I was most attracted by the idea that it’s a moisturizer and face powder in one. Lazy girl thinking at its best, there. I wasn’t too concerned about the whitening part, but I was hoping that this is really a good moisturizer/face base for everyday use.

It comes in a 20-gram tube, with the pink-and-white theme that SkinWhite uses. It ends in a spout, thankfully, which really controls the amount dispensed. It’s a very thick cream, but very spreadable. It took very little time for my skin to adjust to the product, with only a tiny amount of tingling at the beginning. Now it doesn’t react anymore. It spreads easily on the face and feels actually quite nice. I use it mostly as a moisturizer/base, and put on the rest of my makeup on top of it. It shortens my routine by a whole step since it combines the moisturizer and the face base. Sometimes I don’t even put on foundation or BB cream anymore as this suffices on most lazy days.

This 20-gram tube costs only a mere Php69! There is also a 7-gram version that goes for only Php19. The Face Cream Powder comes in four shades: White, Light Beige (my sample), Rose White, and Natural Beige. I’m highly impressed with this product, and I definitely will rebuy this once I run out (which is soon, at the rate I’m using it!).

You can know more about SkinWhite at their website, facebook, twitter, and instagram; just follow the links!

The Sunday Currently #6

You may or may not have noticed that I skipped a sunday. It was just waaaay too busy that week for me and I couldn’t get anything done blog-wise. It’s less than a week and it’s christmas already! I’ve gotten most of my shopping done except for maybe one or two, and that is driving me nuts! Hopefully a lot of people had gone out of the metro already so the traffic would be more bearable.

I could not wait until 2015 before I start using my new Moleskine planner! I printed out a couple of pages of the planner template (from the Moleskine website) and pasted it in one of the “dead” pages in front. I am in love with the stickers (bought from Toys R Us!) and the colored pens.

My daughter volunteered to sing at their class christmas party, which came as a huge shock to me because she had always been shy. I am really happy that she finally found herself in this new school enough to gain confidence for a public performance. This is the song she performed: Everytime We Touch, by Cascada.

My daughter and I finally finished rewatching Hataraku Maou-sama!, and we can’t wait for season 2 to come out!

Do you have a new puppy? Then you might be interested in enrolling yourself and your new pup in a training class! Pet Centrics offers puppy classes and beginner training classes, and has recently released their 2015 schedule. I have enrolled my dog Zelda in one of the puppy classes about a year ago and she benefited a lot from the training and socialization.

Discovered a new shawarma place at Eton Centris called Mazza (they have a facebook page! and apparently they have many branches already). Their all-beef shawarma wrap is the best!

Can I be a little lame? I was craving some instant pancit canton recently so I prepared myself some Nissin Instant Yakisoba. A little trivia: this is what my daughter was pinaglihian! I know it is totally unhealthy, but it has been months since I had some!

Excited, like a kid, for christmas! Ever since my daughter has hit the age where she started having her own thoughts and opinions, it has been quite fun seeing her during the holidays. It’s especially exciting to see how she’d like the gift/s we prepared for her. There are some challenges, of course, since she is also quite crafty and wily and can negotiate like the best palengkeras. This year we gave her a deadline to decide what she wanted to get for christmas, and she is no longer allowed to change her mind past the deadline. It worked!

How was your week?

FOTD: Five Minute Face

One of my criteria for packing an everyday makeup bag is that the contents should allow me to put on a face in ten minutes or less. This is a recent look I did that I accomplished in five minutes. Note that this five minutes does not include any prep work (moisturizing, cleansing, etc).

And here are the items I used:

Daiso Eyebrow Pencil; VMV Hypoallergenics Oooh La Lash Volumizing Mascara; Etude House Proof10 Eye Primer; Catrice Absolute Eye Color in Mud Spencer and Coralle Hill; Catrice Matt Mousse Makeup; Canmake Cheek&Cheek; Revlon Colorburst Lip Butter in Lollipop

One of the key techniques for accomplishing a speedy look is to use the one-shadow trick. I used the dark bronze shade in my Catrice palette (swatches here) all over my lid and blended it into the crease to create depth.

I’m really liking this mascara so far! The wand is the thin kind that I like, and the formula isn’t goopy. I look like I actually have lashes! And if I wanted more drama, I would pile on more layers of mascara and that would be okay! (as it is, this is a work-appropriate look)

FOTD: Very Red

Just a quick post about one of the looks I did last week.

Here I used the following items:

Empro Triangular Eye Pencil; Fairy Drops Platinum Mascara; Pixi Mesmerizing Palette in Plum Quartz; Pixy Ultimate Makeup Cake; Canmake Cheek&Cheek; Catrice Prime and Fine Eyeshadow Base; FS Cosmetics Matte Lipstick

The plums aren’t very evident with my glasses on, unfortunately. I still haven’t gotten the hang of my new camera, so it’s also still not evident even with close up shots of the eyes. I used shades number 2 and 5 here (counting from the top).

fotdveryred4n fotdveryred5n

I like the FS Cosmetics Matte Lipstick though! It’s really quite matte, and not as sheer as I had feared from the arm swatch. It’s very office appropriate, and definitely brings on the holiday feel. This convinces me to try out more of their shades!
