The Sunday Currently #16

With the new editorial calendar, I have determined that I can do one Sunday Currently per month and that it will probably happen on the last Sunday of every month. This way, I will not feel pressured to write about my personal life and at the same time I will probably have enough material to talk about for all the categories.

Reading

aynrand

I’ve been on an Ayn Rand binge lately. I’ve attempted to read Atlas Shrugged before, but the small print on the book has always turned me off. Anthem and Ideal are not as thick and long as Atlas Shrugged, and I decided to start with that. I enjoyed both a lot although I like Anthem better, and I think I am ready to plunge into Atlas Shrugged again after this. If you’re not familiar with Ayn Rand, she is the one that developed the philosophical system Objectivism.

Writing

Lists, particularly my hobby wishlist. I’m instituting a “tiered” wishlist, where basically I divide the items into tiers. The idea is that if I have money to spare for my hobbies, I will be prioritizing buying the items in the top tier first. Once all of the top tier items are bought, I can then start looking at the next tier items. The idea is that I will not go crazy with buying stuff, and I can cross check if I really want an item or not. So far it’s been going fine, and I’ve managed to curtail my spending and also cross off a few items from the list.

Listening

I’m not sure when I discovered Lindsey Stirling, but I’m now hooked! She mixes two of her passions: violin and dancing! My favorite remains Master of Tides, although she has a lot of other beautiful and engaging songs.

Watching

Image credits: Heneral Luna Facebook page

I cannot say enough about Heneral Luna. It’s one of the best Filipino movies ever made, and one of the top five movies of all time in my book. It tells the story of the fiery General Antonio Luna, the head of the Philippine military at the time of the Philippine-American war. The movie is funny, irreverent, and does not shy away from the horrors of war, and is really a much better history teacher than the one I received in school. I’m planning to see it again!

Playing

argent

Have I ever mentioned that I (and my husband) are boardgame players? The latest one we’ve played is Argent, The Consortium. The idea here is that you play as an eligible candidate to the chancelorship of a magic university, and you are trying to gather votes from a mysterious board of regents. It is a worker placement game where you place your mages in certain rooms so that you can take certain actions, which in turn lets you gather certain things that will convince members of the board to vote for you. It’s very fun and engaging, and the components of the game are well made.

Creating

I’m changing up the Cooking category to Creating. I don’t foresee myself cooking anytime in the near or far future so there’s no point to it. Instead, I do find myself on a roll in the creating department. In this case, I’ve discovered an interest in zentangles! It’s basically a doodling form where the use of repeating patterns is a feature. The materials used are just paper and a pen, that’s it! Here is my first attempt at zentangling.

My first attempt at zentangling. A very soothing pastime actually!

Thinking

I’ve been thinking about the psychology of hoarding recently. I really don’t like the fact that I have quite a bit of stuff for my hobbies, and yet I still feel the “need” to buy even more stuff. I need to find a way to use up my stuff first before getting more. Have you heard of the KonMari method of organizing? I might try this some time to declutter and keep only the things that I want.

Wanting

The busy season of my work has begun, so now I’m really wanting some extra time. I’ve been coming home really exhausted that I just fall asleep, only to wake up and do the same thing. Weekends have never looked so good!

Feeling

Excited! I’ve been trying to gather some things that are slowly coming together, which for sure I will be sharing with you here soon enough!

The Sunday Currently #15

As usual, it’s been so long since the last edition of Sunday Currently. I’ve been a bit busy (yeah, excuses) and so we should have a lot going on here!

Reading

This is where I feel my “sunday currently hiatus” the most, as I have not been able to read much since my last entry. I do have some ongoing reads but I don’t feel like I have actually been “reading” them per se. By the by when I say reading, I meant actual books, which excludes blogs, which I continue to read regularly.

Writing

Aside from my now-regular journaling and planning, I’m also dipping my toes into trying out an actual editorial calendar for this blog. A nice article by Beautyholics Anonymous is my main inspiration, and I feel like I can have a much better blogging rhythm if I follow a blog calendar. So yeah, here’s to hoping for more regular posts for Becoming Sleek!

Watching

inside out poster

Inside Out and its shorts. I think this film might be my new all-time favorite, and has just edged out Moulin Rouge. Some reviews I’ve seen says that Inside Out is written for adults, and there’s some truth to that, but it’s also a great movie for kids. In the words of my daughter, “I wish I’ve seen this film two years ago!” My favorites are Anger and Sadness. I can’t wait until the sequel comes out, and I hope it addresses the important stuff that happens in adolescence.

Listening

My recent earworm is a not-so-new song by Weird Al Yankovic called Word Crimes. Not only is it a catchy song, but the video is a feast for type-nerds like me!

Playing

Phone games, as usual! Right now my current favorites are a horror-ish action game called Hopeless: The Dark Cave, and a cute cat mahjong game called Hungry Cat Mahjong.

Eating

If you read my current post about my diabetes, you’d know that I really need to shape up in terms of food. I’ve gone back to mainly seafood and chicken, and only the occasional pork or beef treat, to help cut down on my triglycerides.

Wanting

More traveler’s notebooks, what else? Haha, well honestly I probably have enough (you’ll see soon in a future post!) and I can’t imagine being able to use everything at the same time, so I will be shelving some of them. It’s just that there are so many pretty ones out there that I feel I need to have, you know?

Feeling

anger-inside-out

Stressed out, honestly! It’s things that I feel should be in my control, but it looks like they’re not. I’m not totally sure if there’s anything I can do to change that, but I’m just hanging on to my sanity right now and hope I’ll come through.

The Sunday Currently #14

It’s been *gasp!* two months since my last Sunday Currently! There has been so much that happened in those two months, the main one being another hospital stay, boo. This time it’s an infection that turned into a persistent cough that I’m still battling at the moment. Diabetes is making recovery from even just cough a lot longer, so I really need to take more care about my health moving forward.

Reading

I’ve been reading mostly comics recently. The ones I have finished are Ms. Marvel (Kamala Khan) Collected Volumes 1 (No Normal) and 2 (Generation Why), The Immortal Iron Fist The Complete Collection Volumes 1 and 2, and Transformers: More Than Meets The Eye Volumes 2-4. All of them are quite enjoyable to read, and I am quite excited to read the next volume of Ms. Marvel which was just released last month.

Writing

I’ve been having a lot of fun journaling in my Blue, and have been more or less successful doing a daily entry. I’ve also been dabbling with the popular #listersgottalist challenges, although I dropped the ball for the June lists. I’m doing okay with July, so I’m quite happy with that.

Watching

Youtube has sucked me in. There are a lot of channels I’m following avidly, and to be honest they are mostly planner, journal, and scrapbook related ones.

Playing

neko atsume

I’ve successfully weaned myself out of Township, which is great since it’s just basically a farmville-type game. Right now, I’m hooked into this Japanese game called Neko Atsume (which roughly translates to “cat gathering”). The premise is basically you have a backyard of sorts where you put out some cat toys, and these toys attract cats to come and play with them. When you catch them currently playing with the toys you can take photos of them, and I think that’s part of what you are collecting (the cat pictures). The art is in the hand-drawn style, and it’s really absolutely cute.

Wanting

For some reason I’m finding myself lemming for some locally-made fauxdoris, even though I am completely satisfied with my Blue. I just want to see how the workmanship is, and I really enjoy supporting local artisans. I already have a list of fauxdoris I want to buy, and I’m just trying to schedule it so that I don’t bunch up my purchases.

Feeling

Generally shitty, health-wise. I can really feel the damage that the infection did on me and still doing to me, and it sucks that I can’t bounce back as quickly as I did before (which, to be honest, wasn’t really quick either). I’m taking extra care and all the meds, and I’m also taking the time to visit my internist to solve this infection issue, but yeah it still pretty much sucks.

Happy sunday to you guys!

The Sunday Currently #13

It’s been an eventful past few weeks. The highlight is an unintended hospital stay (diagnosis was acute gastroenteritis) about two weeks ago which threw a wrench into several plans, but I’m really just happy to be out and about and back to work.

Reading

redqueenhandmaid

Just finished reading these two books. Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard is a recently-published dystopian almost hunger games-ish tale of a girl who was supposed to have no powers (red-blooded) suddenly displaying the sort of abilities that previously only silver-blooded people had. It follows her perilous journey through what happens after that discovery, and the tale will take you on a heart-pounding ride. I honestly really liked the story, but I felt slightly cheated at the end, and only because I was expecting this to be a standalone book and it was showing all the signs of being a trilogy (or more). I am reserving my final judgment until I read the rest of the series.

The Handmaid’s Tale, on the other hand, is a classic. Published in 1985, it is one of the books that I always see on top-x lists of books to read. Again a dystopian setting (I love this genre!) this time of what could result if society decided to impose strict roles on women. Due to some problems with fertility, “viable” females are assigned the role of handmaids, and their main function, as you can guess by now, is to produce children. This story follows one such handmaid and her recollections of the past and what is happening to her at the time of the writing. It’s very emotional, but is definitely quite a good read.

Marvel’s Daredevil. I’ve only watched the first two episodes so far, and it’s a lot different than what I expected. Different, and much better! I love how it’s being portrayed as a crime drama rather than the ostentatious action films that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been showing us so far. I am just hoping that the entire series won’t continue with Daredevil with just that plain black costume.

Cooking

My husband remembered that I once used to do Shake ‘N Bake chicken, and he requested that we try that again. It’s very simple to use! Just pour the powder mix into the included plastic bag, throw in your desired chicken (I use skinless chicken breast fillets, he likes chicken wings), twist the bag to seal and toss to coat, lay out in a baking pan, then bake away at the recommended temperature and time! Instant “fried chicken”-ish type dish without the actual frying!

Wearing

shortesthair

A new haircut! This is my shortest hair yet and in this incredible heat I am loving it! I have to take care not to dress too masculine though, as I have this nagging feeling that I look like a guy otherwise. XD

Thinking

About all of the things I need and want to do. As I said, I’m on a huge catchup mode and I still have a lot on my to do list. I’m about to feel overwhelmed to be honest, but I’m taking it one day at a time.

Wanting

More than 24 hours a day! Why is a day super short?

Feeling

A bit confused, to be honest. It seems like my interest in makeup has gone onto the backburner at the moment, and most of my attention is on planner and crafting things (hence the recent flood of non-beauty posts here). I know that interests change, but it makes me a little sad as well to not be beauty-focused right now. Have you ever experienced anything similar?

The Sunday Currently #12

I’m back in the Philippines! It was quite a short trip for such a long travel time, but I loved every moment of it. I thought it was worth going, but I’m definitely happy to be home as well.

Reading

There’s quite a few things on my reading list right now, but the one that’s staying on my mind is the comic called Chew. The story follows the life of a US FDA agent who is able to psychologically read the history of things through… eating them. The idea is very interesting, and there’s actually a lot of action (and gore!) going on. The art is great (it’s colored!) and I’m enjoying the pace as well.

Writing

I’m pretty much on a roll here, with my journals moving splendidly along. I’ve recently started to experiment with my own version of Project Life, which is basically attempting to have a photodiary-slash-scrapbook of sorts. Once I get it going well, I’m going to write about it in more detail.

Listening

Still on a Manhid high, so I’m listening to their official soundtrack on repeat. It unfortunately only contains 12 songs. I would love to get a copy of the whole thing to be honest!

Eating

My new diabetic diet has been sort of compromised during my trip because of all the eating out I did with my friends and colleagues. There weren’t always a lot of healthy options for me, so I definitely need to do a lot of catching up. The biggest challenge is really to consciously make sure 50% of my meal should be vegetables and fruits.

Wanting

I got quite a few items ordered online which will not be arriving for quite some time yet, but I’m already getting quite impatient! I want to get them now!

Feeling

Quite a bit thankful for some nice news I got in my life. Let me be vague for a while so that I won’t jinx it, haha!

Happy sunday to you!

The Sunday Currently #11

As this publishes, I’m probably up in the air on my way to the Caribbean on business. It’s exciting and also quite stressful, but I actually enjoy long haul flights.

Reading

The geek in me is pretty much hooked in the Transformers comics I’m currently reading. The series is called More Than Meets The Eye, and what’s interesting about it is that the storyline centers around the events after the conclusion of the great war between the Autobots and Decepticons. There’s a lot more of intrigue than of action, if you’re familiar with Transformers.

Writing

I’ve moved in to my Alunsina traveler’s notebook fully. I’m going to show you around it soon, but suffice to say that I’m very pleased with it. I’m also trying to catch up on my journaling prompts, and I feel like I will have a lot of time to do that while on the flight!

Watching

I love this video. Great song, great message. Every Filipino should watch it.

Playing

I’m a little ashamed to admit this, but I’m hooked on a farmville-type game right now called Township on Android. There’s really not much to say about it except that it’s kinda like farmville, haha!

Eating

Chicken, seafood, and veggies mostly. (see below)

Wearing

As I’m preparing to pack for my trip, I am wearing out all the clothes I don’t intend to bring (I don’t have a big wardrobe). That means I’m usually in a skirt, blouse, and boots combo for work instead of my standard slacks and blouse.

Feeling

Excited, and also apprehensive, because of my upcoming work trip. I’ve been unable to sleep well for the past few nights because of a very nagging feeling of “I’m gonna forget to pack something”.

Also feeling a bit of denial. I’ve been diagnosed as diabetic (type 2) recently, and I haven’t quite accepted it yet, going around thinking it’s not a big deal. Intellectually I know what that means, and what effect that will have for the rest of my life, but emotionally I’m not there yet. I have started changing my diet (see above) and so far I’m doing fine in that regard. I also need to start busting my ass on physical exercise, to get my body back in shape. That is what my doctor has prescribed (beyond the maintenance meds) – a more active lifestyle is the best answer.

See you soon Philippines!

The Sunday Currently #10

Welcome to another of my sparse Sunday Currentlies!

Reading

Finished rereading books #2 and 3 of Jim C. Hines’ Princess Quartet (Mermaid’s Madness and Red Hood’s Revenge respectively), and slowly getting through the Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff Omnibus, by Richard Carlson. I find that reading two to three entries at a time is a great pace, and it really helps that idea of calming down and letting go of inconsequentials.

sc10-3 sc10-4

I also sat down and finished Neil Gaiman’s The Sleeper and the Spindle in one go, and for good reason. It’s just.So.Good! It kinda ties in to my current reading of fairy tale retellings, and this one with the good old Neil Gaiman twist. If you read his Dream Hunters illustrated book (illustrator: Yoshitaka Amano) the style is kind of similar, but with Chris Riddell as artist. The book itself is beautiful, with a nice dust cover style that has part of the art that works with the actual book cover.

Writing

Still more journal entries. I think I already got the hang of the everyday writing, and I am immensely enjoying it. I am also on a quest to finish my current journal book (black lined Moleskine) by the first week of March. Hopefully by that time, I will receive the Alunsina Kislap refillable journal that I finally ordered. I’m so excited that I wanted to practice a new planner format. I didn’t get the planner books from Alunsina because they have that Saturday/Sunday bias; I just got a couple of blank books to draw my own layout in. Here’s the one I came up with, made with the blank back page of a BDJ Forget-Me-Not Ideas Journal pad and washi tapes. I’m so far liking it!

sc10-1

I also started a Reading Journal – basically chronicling the books that I read and what I think about them. I wish I had started this much earlier in life! Think of all the books I’ve read!

Watching

A play called Manhid: Pinoy Superhero Musical. I first saw this play in an amateur showing at my high school and loved it. It was apparently co-written by the Eraserheads, how cool was that! Now it’s coming to the big stage, presented by Ballet Philippines. My husband and I instantly snapped up tickets the moment it became available! Here’s the show’s blurb by Ballet Philippines:

What price is our freedom? The season ends with the cult dance rock musical MANHID, co-presented by Tanghalang Pilipino. Set in an alternate present day Philippines where the EDSA revolution failed, this musical features heroes and villains with superpowers, and a people sick with Kamanhiran (Apathy). Celebrating a nation of heroes, MANHID promises to be a must- watch event for 2015.

Watched this last night and It.Was.Awesome! Manhid: Pinoy Superhero Musical

A post shared by Becoming Sleek (@becomingsleek) on

It was beyond awesome! It’s certainly one of the highlights of this year!

Playing

I’m an avid supporter of Humble Bundle, particularly their mobile packs. In one of my recent purchases I got Sorcery!, a choose-your-own-adventure type of game where you’re provided choices in the hero’s journey. It’s not your usual fast-paced game. I’m sure I haven’t gotten far but I’m having fun with it! It’s nice that I was also able to get Sorcery! 2 in a later bundle so I have that in line for my next mobile game.

Eating

Waffles! My husband and I are currently addicted to waffles, and we are now suki of the Belgian Waffles stall at Glorietta 4 food court. Yum!

Wearing

My relatively new Nike rubber shoes. I consciously bought a black one so that people will not immediately assume I’m wearing rubber shoes to the office.

sc10-2

It’s apparently not as wholly black as I thought, now that I take a closer look It has some dark camo green accents going on. It’s super comfy though!

Thinking

My daughter is recently studying about space in her science class, and has come to me for some “space bedtime stories”. Which means me reading to her random topics from this book I had as a child (The Junior Colour Encyclopedia of the Universe, published 1982!). It got me so excited about space and universe things again, and I even beg her sometimes to not sleep yet (on a school night, way to go mom!) and let me read her some more stuff please! Haha, that’s the nerd in me coming out again.

This got me into discussing to her the recent goings-on about the Mars explorations such as Curiosity the rover and the Mars One expedition. Which got me thinking about how exciting the advancement of science is in this regard, and yet how sadly unrealistic the Mars One project really is. Wouldn’t it be nice to see humans on Mars in our lifetime? But this begs the question of, why aren’t we establishing a base on the moon first?

Wanting

To get my Kislap already (edit: It has arrived!!)! Yes I’m pretty one-track-minded, and I can’t wait to get it!! In the meantime I tried to distract myself with other notebooks and planner goodies. Check out this ridiculous haul. And yet I find myself still wanting more washi tape and notebooks.

I think this is what they call hoarding. 😅

A post shared by Becoming Sleek (@becomingsleek) on

Feeling

Happy! I was able to meet with my good blogger friend Kira this week (we had ramen!) and it was nice talking beauty (and other stuff) with her! We even got to look around the famed SM Makati Beauty section.

Ramen early dinner with @kirasworld at Kichitora! Yummy!

The Sunday Currently #9

Yikes I actually skipped two weeks of this! I think this is much better than just publishing a half-assed entry, so bear with me if I skip a week or two here and there. I have just been too busy with work and could not find the time to photograph stuff.

Reading

I’m currently re-reading Jim C. Hines’ first quartet, Princesses. It’s a great take on the classic fairy tales (Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty), and re-imagined in the same world. It’s very action-packed and quite great in the characterization department. I just finished the first book, The Stepsister Scheme. Unfortunately I haven’t seen these in local bookstores (in fact none of Hines’ books are). I got these from Amazon, delivered through a forwarder. Check out his webpage for more info!

Writing

My journal/s. For the most part I have a large notebook for serious journaling, but I also decided to start mobile journaling (if there’s such a thing) in my Moleskine notebook. For the longest time I had been dithering about that because I could not imagine having multiple places to journal, but I could not really bring the large notebook with me because 1. it’s not hardbound, and 2. it’s a little too private. I’m keeping my journaling in the Moleskine pretty light, and most of it is really just rambling thoughts on the rare idle few minutes I find everyday.

I really like being able to write freely like this. It helps with keeping my sanity and temper intact. Perhaps it’s just confirmation bias, but I feel like whenever I skip a day journaling my temper really frays more quickly and I become more anxious and prone to panic attacks. Hence my decision to just go and journal on that tiny notebook that I bring with me everywhere.

Watching

Into_The_Woods_(film)

Just watched Into The Woods yesterday, and I have to say it’s now one of my favorite musical movies! I really liked the play version, and had really low expectations of the movie, but I was pleasantly surprised. There were nuances in the lyrics/dialogues that were very hard to catch in the play version that were brought into the light in the movie. It made me appreciate just how nice the whole production is. Meryl Streep as the Witch is pretty awesome, and James Corden as the Baker really drew me in. Would rewatch again and again!

Thinking

Have you heard of the idea of “pick two: time, money, energy”? That, when you’re young like a student, you get time and energy but no money; when you’re at the peak of your career, you get money and energy but no time; and when you’re old and retired, you get time and money but no energy. I’m at the second stage (peak of career), and I can say that this is not true. You’d be lucky to have even one! I’m likely mismanaging something in my life.

Wanting

More time and energy! See below.

Feeling

Exhausted again! Not only am I in a crunch time at work (busy season is upon me!), but I have decided to rescue more kittens. Meet these babies:

Clearer picture of the three.

A post shared by Becoming Sleek (@becomingsleek) on

Found in the general area where we find stray kittens. We heard them miaowing and I went and found them hidden in some rocks and bushes. No mother in sight. These are the tiniest ones I rescued so far, and unfortunately that means they aren’t really weaned yet. I hope these are really strays, but we suspect that someone threw them out after their cat gave birth. I have words to say to these people. Grr! Spay your cats if you don’t want kitties!

These are absolutely the last ones I can take in, though. It’s getting very crowded at home, and my time isn’t really increasing to take care of everyone. It still astounds me though that in a span of about six months, I went from having zero cats to five!

The Sunday Currently #8

Hello 2015! This is my first Sunday Currently of the year (yep, I missed last week, but never mind that) and I am quite pumped! I don’t really want to join the bandwagon of putting in resolutions, and the year in review will come in a separate post. I do have great hopes for this year, and I am determined to make it an awesome year.

Writing

Holy shit, I think this is the year I’m finally getting things written down! I have started “officially” using my Moleskine planner and so far it’s working the way I want to. I’ve also started an actual written journal and a separate photodiary for some form of #ProjectLife, which I intend to put in another separate post because why not. I’m feeling good about this, and I’m beginning to get twinges of stories for the fiction that I want to write.

Listening

L’arc en Ciel is one of my favorite bands, and I am revisiting their music through Spotify. I’ve been listening to them since high school (!!) and I’ve never gotten tired of it. At the moment my favorite album is Awake.

Playing

Image credits: Spaceteam on Play Store
Image credits: Spaceteam on Play Store

I want to bring your attention to Spaceteam. Its blurb on the Play Store says it is “a cooperative shouting game”. If you are a fan of Star Trek, imagine you’re like a crew member with your own instrument panel on your phone screen. Prompts come up on top showing what action needs to be done or which instrument needs to be set at which level. Most of the time the prompt on your screen is for an instrument panel of another player’s. Hence you shout it at them and get them to follow it. At the same time, they are shouting back at you to follow their prompts! Hilarity ensues as you try to wrap your tongue around the appropriate technobabble such as “Set Geiger Powerlantern to 3” or “Unbind Iota-magnet”. The game will also throw curveballs such as asteroids (all players must shake the phone to avoid them) and wormholes (everyone must flip their phones upside down to survive them). My brothers and I love to play this, and I can’t wait to try a 4-player game!

Ahemmmm excuse me, the geek is leaking out.

Clicking

I’ve just fallen into the black hole that is called hand lettering, fountain pens, planners, and calligraphy. There are soooo many blogs and sites that I need to read, but for now, I’m backreading The Well-Appointed Desk and Plannerisms. And finding even more stuff to read through them! On the bright side it’s keeping me inspired to further my skills.

Eating

balkankitchen

There’s a new restaurant that opened up in my workplace. It’s called Balkan Kitchen, and it serves Yugoslavian home cooking. I’m enjoying it so far, so much that I want to try out as much of their dishes as I can in the succeeding lunch breaks.

Thinking

There is always the issue of wanting to do too many things, and there’s only 24 hours in a day. I’m really hoping that this planner business is going to help me manage my time better this year, but unfortunately it seems like I’m also wanting to do even more things! I need a better way to manage my hobbies maybe. Perhaps there really is only so many hobbies one can pursue.

Wanting

I find myself acquiring a lot of planner accessories (stickers, sticky notes, colored pens, highlighters, etc) more than makeup these days, which is surprising! I want to get more notebooks and sketchbooks, more markers and pens for lettering, and of course more stickers!

Feeling

Thankful. As I said about two weeks ago we had our cat’s troublesome eye removed before it affects the rest of her body. The operation was quite successful, and the post-op was exhausting (for me, specifically because of all the meds and stuff she needs that I need to give; and for her, because she’s recovering). She is now finally allowed out of the crate and she cannot be happier! Five more days and the cone can come off as well, and everything will be back to normal, minus the eye!

The Sunday Currently #7

Happy holidays! I hope you’re having just as much fun as possible! This year has been a great one for my family, with several new additions all at once which I will write about very soon. Right now though, will be my last Sunday Currently of 2014.

Writing

In an attempt to develop a writing habit, I got myself this nice book: 642 Things To Write About, from Fully Booked BHS. It’s basically just a book of writing prompts, but with spaces to actually write in, like a school workbook. In fact the cover makes it look exactly like that! I’m hoping that having something like this will kickstart some creativity in me.

Gonna rely on this bad boy to kickstart a writing habit! Bought from @_fullybooked BHS

A post shared by Becoming Sleek (@becomingsleek) on

Reading

A whole lot, but mostly work related. I like HBR publications (Harvard Business School) and I’m starting a collection of HBR books that I can use for work. Right now I have On Managing People and Negotiation, and I hope to get more!

Watching

A Parisian Winter Tale by Montblanc. A four-part short film series by a fountain pen maker which is quite apt for the christmas season. Very touching and the workmanship is exquisite! Make sure to watch all four parts, and the making too!

Playing

My brother gifted my daughter the boardgame Sushi Go! by Gamewright. It’s a pick-and-pass card game (aka the drafting mechanism) and the objective is to garner the most points after three rounds. Each type of sushi or condiment gives a certain number of points based on the number of those cards you have played. It’s pretty simple and of course my daughter loves it, but there’s a surprising depth to it!

Eating

It feels slightly disloyal, but my husband and I have started liking Saboten over Yabu these days. The rice seems fresher and more authentic, and the cuts of pork seem better overall. I’m in love with the katsudon since they serve it in a hot pot and the pork is practically swimming in egg!

Cooking

I baked some cookies! As was my standard for the past few christmasses, I bake huge batches of cookies for giveaways. Alas this year I was pressed for time and was only able to make one batch of Chocolate Chunk Cookies as house gifts for the relatives’ houses we’re visiting. This is the recipe I use, although I’m not really super strict about it. For example I forgot the brown sugar in this latest batch, so instead I just added white sugar at the end of the dough mixing.

Thinking

2015 is coming soon, and I am looking forward to it! It’s going to be a great year and I hope yours is too!

Feeling

A bit scared. My first rescue cat, Katkat, is scheduled for an operation tomorrow. Her bad eye finally gave up (she had it since we rescued her) and now needs to be excised before it affects the rest of her body. She is very fidgety right now and I’m scared she’ll hurt her remaining good eye, so we put her in a cone of shame. Wish us luck!
