The Beauty Scenario Tag

I was tagged by Rae, prompting me to finally do a beauty post after a long series of paper-related posts. Thanks Rae! The Beauty Scenario Tag is basically just a bunch of scenarios/questions that I have to answer.

You have to get rid of all of your foundations and keep only one high-end and one drugstore, which would you keep?

ellanafoundie

I don’t really have any high-end foundations, so I’m not considering that. For midrange I’ll go with Ellana Minerals Loose Mineral Powder Foundation in Caramel Latte (I need a pressed version of this!) and for drugstore it will be Pixy UV Whitening Two Way Cake.

You go for an interview and the lady interviewing you has lipstick on her teeth. Do you approach the subject or ignore it completely?

As an interviewer (part of my job), I wouldn’t really mind if the interviewee mentions it or not. I would, however, mind if he/she keeps looking at it and being distracted from the actual interview and not telling me about it. If I were the one being interviewed, I’ll definitely just ignore it completely.

You’re not feeling yourself and you need a pick-me-up lipstick, which do you go for?

ofra205pink

A pink would always feel like a great pick-me-up because it’s fun and bright. In my stash, one of my favorite pinks is Ofra #205.

You go back in time for a day to your teenage years, how would you do your hair or makeup differently?

The only thing I would change is to use sunscreen more often. I didn’t wear makeup back then, and I have always gone with a wash-and-wear (or wash-and-tie) hairstyle until today, and I wouldn’t change that at all.

You ask your hairdresser for a shoulder length Pixie Lott hair cut but they hear wrong and give you a pixie cut, what do you do?

A) Smile, say thank you, call your mum and cry hysterically
B) Cry in the chair and things get awkward
C) Complain to the manager and demand a refund

Like Rae, I had to google who Pixie Lott is. I couldn’t really relate to this question though, as I never had hair longer than shoulder length. I wouldn’t at all mind if they gave me a shorter hair than I asked for, most especially since my husband is a huge fan of short hair. I would call my mum though, just so she can have a laugh with me about it!

Your friend surprises you with a 4 day city break and you have one hour to pack, which ‘Do It All’ palette do you pack in your makeup bag?

cliniqueallinone

I will take my Clinique All-in-One Colour Palette with me, as not only does it have all the makeup I need but it also has usable brushes. Perhaps the only thing it doesn’t have is eyebrow makeup, but I can always diy the eyeshadows for it. This palette is in fact living in my glove compartment at the moment.

Your house has been robbed, don’t worry everyone is safe, but your beauty stash has been raided. What’s the product you really hope is safe?

colourpop02

As again, I do not really have a lot of high-end makeup. Perhaps the one I would hope is safe would be my Colourpop items, as these aren’t really available locally yet and are pretty hard to rebuy.

Your friend borrows makeup and returns it in an awful condition. Do you:

A) Pretend you haven’t noticed
B) Ask them to re-purchase it
C) Secretly do it back to their makeup

I’ll mention it to her/him just so they are aware of the state of the makeup, but beyond that I wouldn’t do anything. It was probably an accident of some sort.

So! I choose you, Pikachu!

FOTD: New Year, New Look

One of the very first things my family did to greet the new year is to have a hair cut. Yes, all three of us! We were all in dire need of a cut so we all trooped to our favorite salon (Bench Fix Lab, Trinoma) and ordered a family-sized haircut (there’s no such thing; but the same stylist did the cut for all three of us). My husband has been clamoring for short hair for me for quite some time, and I went for it!

newlookfotd1

Chopped most of it off, and it actually feels great! One of the funniest reactions I got to the cut was that they assumed something bad happened to me. Does it have to be bad to want a change? I love my new hair, and I hope you do too!

newlookfotd2

Honestly here I have not really styled it as much, and a bunch of it went its usual fly away way. This is my standard corporate look (as per usual), with the addition of some soft eyeliner. I also misplaced my eyeglasses and have to use an old pair.

newlookfotd3

It looks much better in this obligatory car shot (better lighting?), although that fly away strand is just camouflaged by the headrest. Here are the makeup I used:

newlookfotd4
Happy Skin SS Creme, Wet n Wild Color Icon Eyeshadow Palette in Petal Pusher, Daiso Eyebrow Pencil, VMV Hypoallergenics Ooh La Lash Mascara, Pixy Ultimate Cake, K-Palette 1 Day Magic 3D Palette, Catrice Absolute Eye Color in Mud Spencer and Coralle Hill, K-Palette Real Lasting Eyebrow Mascara in Natural Brown, Clinique Long Last Lipstick in All Heart

Empties #1

Seeing this on the blogs of other beauty bloggers, I thought I’d give it a try. The biggest difference is that mine is collected over a long period. I am not really fast in terms of consuming items, but I’m trying to be more diligent in collecting empties, and actually emptying stuff. That said, here’s my first empties post.

empties1

It’s not really a lot, but the one I’m kind of proud of is this set of Bifesta Cleansing Lotion empty bottles. I’ve started using Bifesta approximately at the beginning of this blog, so almost two years ago. Thus far I’ve only used up three (or four, I’m pretty sure I’ve tried the Sebum variant), and I’m currently trying out a new variant, Agecare. I really like how this makeup remover performs, and will always be my go-to for that purpose. I also really like the bottles, very well made. I will be keeping a collection of empty Bifesta bottles! (Bifesta Cleansing Lotion costs Php419 and available at Watsons.)

empties2

Next we have this Clinique 3-Step Trial Kit #2 (for dry-combination). About half a year ago I wanted to get into a good skincare habit, and decided to try Clinique. Luckily they provide a trial kit such as this, to see if it actually works for me before I commit to (huge) full size bottles. I think this set costed me something like Php950, and lasted me for about five months. Among these I really like the facial soap, but overall I think the 3-step system works for me. Unfortunately I won’t be rebuying because Clinique is not cruelty-free.

empties3

These next two are Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Sunscreen SPF 50 and FCUK Pure Body Spray. As far as I know, the Neutrogena one is the best facial sunscreen I’ve used so far. I might rebuy this, because I’m having no luck in my current sunscreen trials. The body spray I got from a friend, I think. I’m really pretty indifferent to fragrance, as long as it’s not too strong. I’m probably not rebuying this either. I have no idea how much either of these cost.

empties5

Two Celeteque items are next: Celeteque Advanced Anti-aging Cleansing Oil (the old formulation) and Celeteque Hydrolyzed Moisturizing Mist. I’ve always liked the cleansing oil for removing waterproof makeup. I’m not really sad that this is phased out, as the new formulation is at least just as good if not better. The moisturizing mist is of course one of my most favorite moisturizers, especially since it’s a spray-on. It’s a tamad blogger’s best friend! It also comes in quite handy during summer. The mist costs Php350 and is available practically everywhere. I need to rebuy this, stat!

empties6

Lastly we have another batch of samples: Shiseido Ibuki Eye Correcting Cream, Shiseido Benefiance Balancing Softener, and Benefit It’s Potent Eye Cream. I think I got these in various BDJ boxes last year. The eye creams were not really remarkable, which means again I’m still on the hunt for an eye cream that works for me. The softener is amazing, though, especially when applied using a sheet mask. Very luxurious, and leaves my skin feeling ultra pampered! I’m might buy full sized as soon as I determine Shiseido’s stance on animal cruelty.

There we have it! I hope you enjoyed my first attempt at discussing my empties. I’m not really sure how often I’ll get to write something like this, but I will be diligent in saving up my empties.

Skincare Matters: Current Night Routine

Today I want to talk to you about skincare, specifically my current night routine. I changed it up a bit to try some new items/steps that I haven’t done before or haven’t been doing regularly.

skincarenight09

Makeup removers

skincarenight01

This is actually where I’m rotating several things to try them out, but Bifesta has been my mainstay for some time. I am about to try out the Bifesta Cleansing Lotion Agecare variant because I want to focus on anti-aging. The other items I’m trying are Nippon Makeup Remover Lotion, Celeteque Advanced Anti-Aging Cleansing Oil, and Bifesta Eye Makeup Remover. I’m pretty excited about that last one since I’ve been waiting forever for a good (yet affordable) bi-phase remover for those stubborn waterproof eye makeup.

Cleanser

skincarenight02

My new cleanser is ZA Perfect Solution Cleansing Foam (from The Beauty Junkee giveaway loot). It’s my first time using a cleansing foam and I’m having so much fun with it! I love lather and it only requires the tiniest of the product to make enough lather for my whole face. I feel really clean and actually moisturized after washing my face with this.

Toner

skincarenight03

This is the only one that I haven’t changed. I’ve been using Etude House Wonder Pore Freshner for quite some time and it’s still my favorite toner by far. I don’t really use it every night, only on nights when I’m feeling extra clogged. I bought this big bottle way back last year (!!) and I’m not really even halfway through it!

Essence/Serum

skincarenight04

This is the new step I’ve introduced to my routine. I’ve decided to really focus on a consistent and complete night routine so I’ve added the essence/serum step (from the Korean and Japanese multistep skincare routines). I chose Etude House Moistfull Collagen Essence because collagen is something I associate with anti-aging. I’m so far liking it, and the packaging feels pretty luxe with that glass bottle. I plan to write a full review of this once I’ve used it for a few months.

Eye Cream

skincarenight05

This is where I’m the most inconsistent. I only put on eye cream when I happen to remember it! Right now my eye cream on rotation is a sample tub of Clinique All About Eyes. It’s not particularly remarkable, and I guess I’m still on the hunt for a good eye cream that I’ll feel connected to.

Cream

skincarenight06

The cream I have started trying is the partner of my cleanser. It’s ZA Perfect Solution Restoring Collagen Cream (also from TBJ gift pack). I love how it ties in with the Etude House collagen line. The bright metallic pink cap is also quite unique. The cream itself is pretty thick and heavy, which makes me be thankful that it comes at the end (usually) of my routine. It basically seals in everything I just piled on. It can be a bit stifling in hot weather but at least recently it’s been getting colder.

Sleeping Pack

skincarenight07

I’ve tried one other sleeping pack (Laneige) and loved it, which is why I decided to get the essence’s partner in the same line. Etude House Moistfull Collagen Sleeping Pack is just that: the sleeping pack part of the routine. It’s pretty gel-like in consistency, and doesn’t really feel bad atop the cream as it’s almost weightless. It’s also not meant to be used nightly; maybe twice a week at most. The main difference between this and the Laneige Sleeping Pack is that the EH one needs to be rinsed off the following morning. I haven’t even used any in the tub yet as I’m using up the product stuck on the lid! This is going to last me a loooong time!

Miscellaneous

skincarenight08

These are just for specific items that I use for specific issues (which isn’t nightly, thank goodness!). Belo AcnePro Pimple Gel for the occasional flare ups; VMV Id Monolaurin Gel for the more serious acne; and VMV Grandma Minnie’s Booboo Balm for, well, booboos! These are used only on an as-needed basis.

skincarenight10

There we have it! It may seem like a pretty tedious process, and it is, but I want to really dedicate some time in my evenings for skin care. I’m already in my 30s and it’s about time I start on a serious anti-aging regimen. Did you try any of these products? I would love to hear your thoughts!

Review: Clinique Lash Power Mascara

Welcome to my very first mascara review! I really wasn’t sure if my current camera can handle such close up details as lashes, but I gave it a go and see if it’s acceptable. The one I’m choosing to review is my current favorite mascara: Clinique Lash Power Mascara.

cliniquelash1

As you may have noticed this looks like a pretty short tube for a mascara. This is a sample-sized mascara that I received in the Clinique workshop loot bag (which is basically a bonus time tin) I attended a few months ago. This only has 2.5ml of product, compared to the 5.5ml of the full-sized tube. The shade that I got is Black Onyx.

cliniquelash2

The brush is one of the things I really like about this mascara. It’s thinner than most mascara wands I’ve encountered, and the bristles are short. I prefer this kind of brush because it’s less likely for me to poke my eye while applying mascara. The formula, on the other hand, is rather thick and goopy. I would usually scrape off the extra product back into the tube before applying it to my lashes.

cliniquelash5

The other thing I really like about this mascara is the fact that it really lengthens the lashes, although just slightly. I think that was kind of the point since the tag line of the product is “mascara extension visible”. It lengthens my lashes and brings enough volume to make my lashes look visible, but does not make it look like I’m all tricked out with mascara. Subtle is nice especially for everyday use. It also seems to aid in curling the lashes, looking at the photo below. I didn’t use any lash curlers here.

cliniquelash3

It’s also pretty long wearing and almost waterproof. I rarely get mascara runs even when I accidentally get rained on, or if I get teary-eyed. On the other hand it’s pretty easy to remove with either Bifesta or a cleansing oil.

cliniquelash4

I’m not really sure how much the full size of Clinique Lash Power Mascara costs. I was planning on getting a full sized tube of this when I run out of the sample, but unfortunately Clinique is sold in China which means they are probably not cruelty-free.

Pros: short-bristled thin brush; long wearing and almost waterproof; easy to remove; results in subtly-enhanced lashes

Cons: thick and goopy consistency; not cruelty-free

20 Days of Lipstick: Week 3

Welcome to Week 3 of my 20 Days of Lipstick beauty dare! Just a short recap, this challenge requires me to use a different lipstick for five days per week without repetition for the entire challenge. Last week I was only able to do four lipsticks; let’s see if I met the challenge this week!

20daylippt3_6

Day 1: VMV Hypoallergenics Subtle Shine Lipstick in Girl Next Door

20daylippt3_1

This came from the huge loot I got from The Beauty Junkee, and is one of the very first things I opened (because lipstick!). This is a nude one for me and really leans brown, and is quite matte (which is weird because it says it’s “Subtle Shine“). It’s quite invisible on me, and applies a little patchy. It has that old-lady smell as well, which is a little offputting.

Day 2: Maybelline Color Sensational in Peachy Scene

20daylippt3_2

Ye gods, it’s been a long time since I used this lipstick. I swatched it here before, and I honestly have forgotten I have this. It’s a, well, peach shade, and a very sparkly one at that, which makes it a little hard to use on an everyday basis. I shall strive to use this a little more often before it turns bad!

Day 3: Pixi Shea Butter Lip Balm in Ripe Raspberry

20daylippt3_3

Permit me another cheat day. This is not exactly a lipstick, nor is it something I don’t normally use (because I totally do!). However I really like the lipstick-like pigmentation of this balm, and of course it’s very moisturizing. Unfortunately I think this is the most pigmented of the available shades, so the others will not be as deeply colored as this. I wore it to a press event.

Day 4: Revlon ColorStay Ultimate Suede in Supermodel

20daylippt3_4

This is another attempt at nude. Supermodel appears quite invisible on my lips, tbh, with a little hint of mauve and just a tiny bit of shine. One of the features of this lipstick that I really like is the locking mechanism of the tube. It makes sure that I don’t smear lipstick all over my bag if the cap suddenly falls off (which happens alarmingly often!).

Day 5: Clinique Long Last Lipstick in Party Red

20daylippt3_5

This is the third of the five lipsticks in my Clinique All-in-one Makeup Kit, and this one is the boldest and brightest of them. Party Red turns out to be a super matte red, and it really is super hard to apply because of that. It’s a great red, however, and I chose this on this day because I had an event to attend and this seemed perfect for the theme! It’s a little drying though.

Yay for a complete week 3! I’m really enjoying this challenge (as you can see!) and I’m a little sad that I’m almost at the end of it. Just one more week to go!

20 Days of Lipstick: Week 2

Welcome to Week 2 of my 20 Days of Lipstick beauty dare! Just a short recap, this challenge requires me to use a different lipstick for five days per week without repetition for the entire challenge. This week I continue to explore the options I have in my stash.

20daylippt2_5

Day 1: Clinique Long Last Lipstick in Creamy Nude

20daylippt2_1

I feel like I’m cheating because there are five lipsticks in this Clinique makeup kit, but rest assured that I actually barely use any of these (primarily because I have to use a brush to use any of these). This day I decided I want to try a nude lip, and I always prefer Creamy Nude (leftmost) over Blushing Nude (middle) because, well, it’s creamy! I like this also because it doesn’t make my lips look washed out or blend into the rest of my face.

Day 2: Ofra Lipstick #205

20daylippt2_2

This is the second lipstick I purchased from Shayne, and this is the other shade sent out in the September 2013 Glamourbox (Beauty SOS). I got the red one (Ofra #202) and I wanted to try out this one so badly. Thankfully Shayne sold hers at a very generous price, and I snapped it up right away! This of course is a pretty bright shade of pink, and looks initially matte upon application. It kind of glistens up after a while, but like #202 it’s a little bit drying.

Day 3: Ever Bilena Shine Lipstick in Flaring Cranberry

20daylippt2_3

One of my lower end lipsticks. I like this one particularly because of its scent. It’s not your usual old-lady smell, but rather like a sweet candy scent. This comes out as kind of a shiny or metallic pinkish red (but it appears much darker here!) and because of its moisturizing center, it is not drying at all. It doesn’t stay on long though, and a reapplication is necessary especially after eating.

Day 4: Colour Collection Ultimate Wear Lipstick in Head Turner

20daylippt2_4

I’ve swatched this before here. This is one of my brightest and glossiest pinks. I like how girly it still looks even if it’s bright and in-your-face. It has average longetivity, but nondrying.

Yes, I only was able to do four this week. I forgot to take pictures of the first day actually, and I can’t even remember what I used! I also didn’t like the fact that the pictures occur in different places. Hopefully I’ll have it better for the next week.

20 Days of Lipstick: Week 1

I am joining this beauty dare, where the challenge is to wear a different lipstick for each of the five working days for four weeks. No repeating! It’s going to be a lot of challenge for me because I don’t really have a huge collection of lipsticks. I’m going to try featuring those that I don’t wear very often. Check out Elaine’s challenge too see how the challenge actually goes.

Let’s start with Week 1!

20daylippt1_6

Day 1: Clinique Long Last Lipstick in All Heart

20daylippt1_1

I wanted to start with my current favorite, and one of my most recent acquisitions: Clinique Long Last Lipstick in All Heart. I bought this from Shayne’s blog sale and I definitely do not regret buying it! It’s a nice glossy shade of berry red, with tiny microshimmers that aren’t noticeable from afar. It’s not that robust though, and will fade with eating or drinking.

Day 2: Snoe Rouge Deluxe in Mauve Movement

20daylippt1_2

This is one of the first lipsticks I bought when I was just starting with beauty blogging. This is a loud mauvey pink shade that appears to be understated on me actually. I don’t normally wear this because it dries me up a little even with a balm underneath.

Day 3: Clinique Long Last Lipstick in Pink Peach

20daylippt1_3

Another Clinique lipstick here, and this one is part of the All-in-One Colour Palette that I received last year. This particular shade is an MLBB for me. It also has a subtle sheen on the finish, but not as obvious as the All Heart. The only disadvantage to this is that I need a brush to apply it, but I love how smooth and even my lips look so it’s worth it!

Day 4: Winmax Pearl Rouge #5

20daylippt1_4

This particular lipstick is part of a huge Daiso Japan haul I did earlier this year. This is a nice understated pink shade similar to Snoe’s Mauve Movement, but costs much cheaper. The bullet is of course appropriately cheaper-looking as well. The application is quite easy, but the formula is a little drying too. I find that I need to apply a balm underneath to avoid patches.

Day 5: Revlon Colorburst Lip Butter in Lollipop

20daylippt1_5

This is, iirc, from one of the first few BDJ boxes I got. It’s pretty soft (buttery, even!) and glides on pretty smoothly. I don’t really understand why I don’t use this more often, to be honest. It’s quite pink, which doesn’t really show in this picture because I have a shitty camera and shitty lighting.

I’ve been enjoying this so far, and I’m happy to have achieved the full five days for last week! Hopefully I’ll get to use up some of the other ones I have in my stash. Maybe you can join me too!

FOTD: Vikings Day

Last weekend I met with Tellie and Kira for a wonderful lunch at Vikings Megamall. It didn’t really start on the best of feet, having had a miscommunication before we even met, but once it started I had a total blast!

vikingsfotd4
My beautiful lunchmates!

Here is what I wore on my face for that day. I wanted to give the Silk Naturals Mineral Eye Colors another shot, now that I have a new eyeshadow base (Artdeco). Here I only used two, Charmed and Thistle.

vikingsfotd1

vikingsfotd2
Sporting my summer cut

It turns out that Charmed really does go pretty sheer once blended. It still shows a little bit green here, but it’s a lot less sparkly than what the swatch shows.

The green is still there, I swear!

Here’s a sample of shenanigans I fall into when taking selfies.
