FOTD: Petal Pusher

My husband’s aunts are here for their almost-regular trip back to the Philippines (they live elsewhere), and we got an opportunity to go out for a sunday lunch with them. One of the aunts have the habit of going around with really interesting eyeshadow work (even at home!). I thought to honor her awesome makeup by going to the lunch with “over-the-top” eye makeup; for me, that is. This was a great opportunity to use my new Wet n Wild Eyeshadow Palette in Petal Pusher.

wnweyeshadows03

Here is what I came up with. I used the left set of eyeshadows, mainly the eyelid and crease shades. I tried using the definer as an eyeliner, and even tried applying it wet, but it wouldn’t show up. I had to use a different one (Maybelline Hyper Glossy Liquid Eyeliner).

petalpusher3

Here’s a close up of the eyelids. The Maybelline eyeliner really contrasts with the shadows.

petalpusher2

This is really quite out of my comfort zone, as I’m mostly used to neutral eyeshadows. If I were to redo this, I would maybe blend a little more and maybe use a transition color between the crease and the eyelid shades. I would love to get feedback from you about this, dear readers! How would you apply such bright colors?

Project Pan 2015 Part 1

2015 is the year of streamlining for Becoming Sleek. I have a lot of products that I have not been paying attention to, even though I have mentioned loving them in this blog. I intend to use at least one of these items in all my FOTDs, whether documented or not. That’s right: every time I’ll be putting on makeup I’ll be using at least one of these.

projectpanpt1-1

Let’s start with the base makeup.

projectpanpt1-2

The Colour Collection Age Defying BB Cream has been one of my favorite BB creams for a while, but I kinda forgot about it when I binned it. Likewise with the Revlon Photoready BB Cream. Now that it’s not really hot yet, I can use these up and hopefully will hit pan on them soon. I added the Essence All About Matt! Fixing Loose Powder to mattify my face after applying the BB creams. The two Beauty Republic BB cream samplers are what I got from the Flawless Beauty Glamourbox, and I wanted to use them up soon.

projectpanpt1-3

I only put one each of eyeshadow palette and blush. The eye palette is one of the Ellefar Princess Chiffon Eyeshadows that I used to love. They are pretty sparkly and not so very apt for everyday use, but I’m putting it in rotation to use it up; maybe in conjuction with some of my matte shadows so it’s not so sparklingly obvious. The blush is one of the first ones I bought, the Ever Bilena Blush in Baby Pink. Even though it’s years old, it’s still good and there’s no funky smell or texture evident. Even so, I’d like to hit pan on this asap.

projectpanpt1-4

Here are two of my older mascaras that are still good. The Fairydrops Platinum Mascara is the best waterproof mascara I have, but it’s coming to the end of its life so I’m fast-tracking its use. Same goes for the Pixy Waterproof Mascara, although this is newer by a few months.

projectpanpt1-5

Lastly the lipsticks set. I have a lot of lipsticks and I’d like to whittle down that number (so I can make room for more!!). On top of the list (and photo) is Colour Collection Ultimate Wear Lipstick in Bellissima. I really love this shade and it’s already getting a lot of attention, but I’m putting it in major rotation to finish it up quicker. In fact, along with Pixy Silky Fit Lipstick in Autumn Apricot (bottom right) these two are now bag mainstays. I also put into rotation the Maybelline Color Sensational Lipstick in Tinted Taupe (bottom left) and Snoe Rouge Deluxe in Mauve Movement (bottom middle), two lipsticks that I really like but are not getting much attention because they’re binned.

projectpanpt1-6

For me to remember to use one of the above every time I put on makeup, I put them all in this nice Pixy tub for easy access. Now it’s much easier to make myself pick at least one item in this tub whenever I fix myself up in the mornings.

Are you on a project pan too? What items are you trying to use up?

20 Days of Lipstick: Week 4

OMG final week! Again as a recap, this challenge requires me to use a different lipstick for five days per week without repetition for the entire challenge. Since I missed one day on Week 2, I’ll see if I can do an extra day this week!

20daylippt4-7

Day 1: Ever Bilena Matte Lipstick in Pink Flame

20daylippt4-1

This is probably one of my oldest lipsticks, and something I occasionally go back to when I feel like going matte. This is a really matte pink, and consequently, it’s pretty hard to apply. It drags soooo much, which can be alleviated by putting on a balm beforehand (but might lose a bit of matte-ness). I’m not sure if this particular shade is still available.

Day 2: Avon Shine Attract Lipstick in Rose Pink

20daylippt4-2

Along with the EB matte lipstick from Day 1, this is also one of my oldest lipsticks. As I knew no Avon lady, I had to use a lot of guts to go into the Avon center along Commonwealth (which I think is really for dealers? I dunno..), run in and grab this, run to the counter to pay, and run out of there! This lipstick uses a balm/lipstick combination where the center is the lipstick part and surrounded by clear balm. It’s actually pretty hard to get the pigment out from the center as it has a tendency to sink into itself, making the balm perpetually longer than the lipstick part.

Day 3: Pixy Semi Matte Lipstick in Red Chili

20daylippt4-3

This of course came from the loot that I got from the Pixy launch, and this is the darkest red of the three lipsticks I received so of course I wanted to try it out right away. As you can see here, it’s actually pretty shiny for a matte lipstick, although that might be due to the lighting. It’s definitely quite a deep vampy red but doesn’t go into the makes-you-look-old category. It’s relatively longwearing, but does not of course survive eating or drinking. I’ll be writing a full review of this and the other two lipsticks soon!

Day 4: Colour Collection Vitamin E Satin Lipstick in Red Wine

20daylippt4-4

This was one of the first Colour Collection items that I tried, from Sampleroom. This one is again a pretty dark color, but unfortunately I think it really does go into that makes-you-look-old category. I’m not sure why this one does, but not Red Chili. Maybe it’s in the subtle shine? Red Wine appears to be more matte, and actually less vampy. [PS: Wow that blue tint is so obvious. Sorry, I didn’t have my usual camera here and had to use an apparently highly inferior substitute.]

Day 5: Maybelline Color Sensational Lipstick in Tinted Taupe

20daylippt4-5

This is yet another nude shade, although this one leans now on the brown side. This is probably my brownest lipstick, and I think it doesn’t look too bad. It’s slightly more longwearing than Peachy Scene, and as it has no shimmer, it’s also more office appropriate.

Day 6: Barenaturals Vitaminstix in I Love You This Smooch

20daylippt4-6

This one is not quite lipstick; it says it’s a lip butter. This came from one of my earliest Glamourboxes, and have not actually been getting the love it deserves. It’s actually a nice solid neutral lip color, and quite hydrating. I just got distracted by newer, shinier things, and this one got shelved as a result. I should put it back on rotation as this is really a solid item.

There we have it! I’m in a whirlwind of emotions as I type this. I’m quite happy to have completed a makeup challenge. At the same time I’m sad that it’s done, as it was a lot of fun! I’ve discovered through your feedback that I really should be exploring nudes as well since it does not look as bad on me as I think it does. I’m also quite surprised that it turns out that I have more than 20 different lipsticks! I’m looking forward to my next makeup challenge. Here are the recap of the first three weeks.

Week 1

Week 2

Week 3

I challenge all of you to try this 20 Days of Lipstick makeup challenge! No need for an actual blog; you can just use Instagram or Twitter to share your lipstick of the day. Tag me at @becomingsleek on either platform, I’m interested to see what you have!

20 Days of Lipstick: Week 3

Welcome to Week 3 of my 20 Days of Lipstick beauty dare! Just a short recap, this challenge requires me to use a different lipstick for five days per week without repetition for the entire challenge. Last week I was only able to do four lipsticks; let’s see if I met the challenge this week!

20daylippt3_6

Day 1: VMV Hypoallergenics Subtle Shine Lipstick in Girl Next Door

20daylippt3_1

This came from the huge loot I got from The Beauty Junkee, and is one of the very first things I opened (because lipstick!). This is a nude one for me and really leans brown, and is quite matte (which is weird because it says it’s “Subtle Shine“). It’s quite invisible on me, and applies a little patchy. It has that old-lady smell as well, which is a little offputting.

Day 2: Maybelline Color Sensational in Peachy Scene

20daylippt3_2

Ye gods, it’s been a long time since I used this lipstick. I swatched it here before, and I honestly have forgotten I have this. It’s a, well, peach shade, and a very sparkly one at that, which makes it a little hard to use on an everyday basis. I shall strive to use this a little more often before it turns bad!

Day 3: Pixi Shea Butter Lip Balm in Ripe Raspberry

20daylippt3_3

Permit me another cheat day. This is not exactly a lipstick, nor is it something I don’t normally use (because I totally do!). However I really like the lipstick-like pigmentation of this balm, and of course it’s very moisturizing. Unfortunately I think this is the most pigmented of the available shades, so the others will not be as deeply colored as this. I wore it to a press event.

Day 4: Revlon ColorStay Ultimate Suede in Supermodel

20daylippt3_4

This is another attempt at nude. Supermodel appears quite invisible on my lips, tbh, with a little hint of mauve and just a tiny bit of shine. One of the features of this lipstick that I really like is the locking mechanism of the tube. It makes sure that I don’t smear lipstick all over my bag if the cap suddenly falls off (which happens alarmingly often!).

Day 5: Clinique Long Last Lipstick in Party Red

20daylippt3_5

This is the third of the five lipsticks in my Clinique All-in-one Makeup Kit, and this one is the boldest and brightest of them. Party Red turns out to be a super matte red, and it really is super hard to apply because of that. It’s a great red, however, and I chose this on this day because I had an event to attend and this seemed perfect for the theme! It’s a little drying though.

Yay for a complete week 3! I’m really enjoying this challenge (as you can see!) and I’m a little sad that I’m almost at the end of it. Just one more week to go!

Products I Am Currently Testing (June 2014)

Here are some new products that I got recently that I am in the process of trying out.

testingrecently

Etude House Proof10 Eye Primer – I’ve been meaning to try this for some time. I am pretty pleased with the Artdeco Eyeshadow Base, but I wanted to compare it to a similarly-priced eye primer. It took me a while to buy it (because reasons!) but I’m happy to finally get to it. I got this at the Greenbelt3 EH branch (near Landmark), for Php299.

Nars Tinted Moisturizer in Finland – I received this sample at the Nars workshop I recently attended. I had initially thought this is a good shade for me, but upon application I think it may be a little too light. I probably need to go one or two shades darker. I’m pretty pleased with this so far, and I am seriously considering buying full (which is around Php2k++). Rae has posted a review of her sample.

Ellana Minerals Sheer Velvet Setting Powder – I’ve been meaning to try this ever since I fell in love with Ellana’s loose powder foundation. I am still a big fan of BB creams and I need a powder to set and mattify and this seemed like a good candidate. It is an incredibly fine powder, very ethereal! I’m looking forward to see how this performs. This, along with the next three items, are from my prize pack from The Beauty Junkee‘s 5th Anniversary Giveaway (thanks again Martha!).

Colour Collection Ultimate Wear Eyeshadow in Golden Veil – Arguably the most anticipated item in the prize pack. I am a neutral eyeshadow whore and I would gladly add to my (already excessive) collection. This one seems to be similar to the Eyebrow/Eyeshadow Quad from Ellana Minerals, but that does not stop me from looking forward to testing!

ZA Impact-full Eyes Groovy – Again another eyeshadow quad, I’m predictable that way. This is an all-shimmer quad from ZA, a brand I’ve never tried before. I’m very excited to try it out, even if it’s full of shimmer shadows of which I’m not really a big fan of. I like the fact that I can try this in tandem with the Proof10 eye primer.

Maybelline Fashion Brow Mascara – I’ve seen this make rounds of the beauty blogs about a month ago, and I’m stoked that I can actually try it out without purchasing it! This is my very first brow mascara, which means it’s something I’ll have to learn to use.

I’m hoping to post some swatches of these soon. Have you tried any of these? What is your feedback for these items?

Haul: November-December

Last month I was not able to put up a haul post, so I am doing a collective haul post for these past two months.

Celeteque Clarifying Shampoo

I’ve already posted an initial impression of this clarifying shampoo, and I can say that this is such a great product! It resets your scalp and rids it of product buildup. In addition it also somehow conditions the hair, making it soft and silky. Just a note of warning: this shouldn’t be used more than once a week. This retails for Php200 for a 250-ml bottle.

Fabulosa Rings and Necklaces

I received a simple necklace from Fabulosa in my Secret Santa Glamourbox. I loved it so much that I immediately purchased three ringsets. About a week later Fabulosa held an auction for more of those simple gold fashion necklaces, and I won it! I now have four new necklaces (the fifth will be included in a giveaway!). Fabulosa’s Amanda is so personable and easy to deal with, and I am looking forward to getting one or two of the statement necklaces. The ring sets are normally Php350 (set of 3 rings) but if you purchase two or more sets it goes down to Php300.

holidayhaul01 holidayhaul02

Paper Chic Studio Washi Tape Set

One of my purchases at the World Bazaar (same day that I visited Bloggers United 6) was this washi tape set from Paper Chic Studio. This is my first experience with washi tapes and so far my daughter is loving it. Myself, I’ve only tried it on a cannister of ear buds and my it looks fab. I got this set for only Php50.

holidayhaul03

Gift from Kira of Elegantly Wasted

Let me just gush like the fangirl I am. One of my goals when visiting Bloggers United 6 was to meet as many of my blog heroes as I can. Kira of Elegantly Wasted is one of them, and luckily enough I did get to meet her there! She is so sweet and charming, and she didn’t mind so much that I looked quite dorky in this photo (check out her rad necklace!). After a quick chat and the photo session I took my leave. It was therefore quite a shock when she sent me this gift, and wow I was flabbergasted when I opened it. The pack included a cute desk calendar, a bliv face mask, three samples of a VMV cream cleanser plus a voucher, Maybelline Color Sensational in Tinted Taupe, a sample of Benefit They’re Real Mascara, and three pots of Silk Naturals mineral eye color. Holy wow! Did I mention wow? Thanks so much Kira!

Models Own Nail Polishes

As part of my holiday order from Glamourbox Boutique (I gave away gift sets to my girlaloos), I got myself a couple of polishes I’ve been lemming for a while now. These are Fuzzy Peach (a nice bright pink-leaning peach) and Blizzard (a color-fest silver gliter topper), Php365 each.

holidayhaul24holidayhaul25

Glamourbox Tote

This very useful canvas tote from Glamourbox is a bonus item when you purchase more than Php2000 worth from the Boutique. I easily went over the minimum when I went christmas shopping and got this wonderful tote.

holidayhaul11

OMG Nail Polishes

A chance trip to Landmark Makati brought me to the OMG display shelf, and I was excited to see some new shades. I bought three for myself that day: Jive (a deep blue), Happy Hour (a shimmery dark purple), and Gold Digger (a bright metallic gold). I’ve already swatched the first with great results. Each bottle of polish costs Php19.75.

holidayhaul21 holidayhaul22

Nail Glue

That same trip to Landmark got me a bottle of nail glue. I need this to try out my new nail studs which I won from The Nailinator‘s giveaway. I think this costs Php40 or thereabouts.

holidayhaul23

Solemate Flats

I am typically not a flats person, as I prefer going around in socks-and-shoes/boots combo. My office christmas party required a filipiniana attire and I needed appropriate shoes for it. Luckily I saw these black Solemate flats with some sort of woven texture and can readily pass for filipiniana. Solemate at SM Makati was having a sale, buy-1-take-1 of selected flats for Php399, so I got this nice cream pair with bow detail as well. I think I am now a convert! These feel so nice and comfy on the feet!

holidayhaul12 holidayhaul13

Sample Room Haul

On the 11th day of christmas I grabbed a Colour Collection Age Defying BB Cream CoQ10 & Green Tea Extract SPF45 and a Sappe Beauti Drink (Fiber 8,000 mg with L-carnitine), all for 140 points. I enjoyed my first CC BB cream (reviewed here) and I expect I would enjoy this one as well. And since I had extra points, I grabbed that beauty drink as well just to try it out.

holidayhaul14

holidayhaul15 holidayhaul16

Dazzle Dry Essentials and Nail Polish

Dazzle Dry had a holiday sale where all items in their store got a major discount! I grabbed myself some essentials, two bottles of Nail Prep (Php100 each) and a top coat (Php400), as well as four bottles of nail polish at Php360 each. I was able to score the following shades: Arctic Sunset, Morning Dew, Pixie Green with Envy, and Blueberry Sno Cone. Can’t wait to show you my swatches!

Review: Maybelline ColorSensational Lipstick in Make Me Pink

The bonus item that I got from the September BDJ Box is this Maybelline ColorSensational Lipstick in the shade 135 Make Me Pink. It was included in the box as compensation for bumping me to September (instead of getting the August box which I had originally subscribed to). I was excited to see this as I really loved my first ColorSensational lippie (in Peachy Scene, from the May BDJ Box).

makemepink3

It comes in the same dark red cover and silver bullet, with the shade name and number at the bottom. I am still a big fan of this packaging, even if the red cover is just sturdy plastic.

makemepink5 makemepink6 makemepink4

Here is the swatch on my arm, one layer on the left and two on the right. As you can see, it’s a little buildable, but not much.

makemepink2

Unfortunately it looks a little weird on my lips. As this is a lighter pink and leans on the neon side, it pops out in a bad way on my darker lips.

makemepink1

The formula is still good though, and it doesn’t dry out my lips. This would cost the same as the Peachy Scene one, at Php399, and can be bought in major supermarkets and drugstores.

Pros: great packaging; availability; affordable

Cons: color doesn’t suit me

Unboxing the September BDJBox

bdjsept33

Before I begin I would like to say that I was honestly not looking forward to this month’s box, primarily because I was bumped to September when I originally subscribed to the August box. As August was my birth month I was really holding it as special. Imagine my huge disappointment when I received the message. Imagine my Double disappointment when I found out what the August box was (Shiseido Ibuki exclusive). So I was not really eager for this (because how could it trump a Shiseido box?!), and was triply disappointed to find out the theme. September’s theme is “Luminiscent Beauty” and as the name suggests, it has something to do with fairness and whitening. I am totally uninterested in whitening as I am quite content with my skin tone so most of this box was very underwhelming for me. However, I would like to still show you what is inside this box.

Warning: Photo-intensive post ahead. [You can click on each image to make it larger.]

bdjsept01

September’s box is the standard BDJ black-and-pink box, but this one was a little thicker than usual.

We are greeted by the welcome cards as well as this month’s sticker (“You are the fairest of them all”). You can see the front, insides, and the back parts of the welcome cards as well.

bdjsept03 bdjsept04 bdjsept05

Upon opening we discover the reason why it’s thick. The box is fully packed, and was double decked that it protruded beyond the height of the box’s bottom.

bdjsept02 bdjsept06

Let’s go over the products in order that it appears on the welcome card. First up is L’Occitane Hand Cream. This tiny tube of hand lotion is enriched with 20% shea butter and other ingredients that will protect, moisturize, soften, and replenish skin. I have only started using hand lotions (right now using Evas Vitamin Hand) and I can see myself using this at some point. It’s a tiny tube so definitely this is portable. This 30ml tube costs Php300.

bdjsept16 bdjsept17 bdjsept18

Second in line is this Olay White Radiance celLucent White Essence Serum (whew!). It’s one of the things in the bottom layer so you weren’t able to see it in the photo above. Unfortunately this is one of those items that go for the whitening angle, although this one supposedly targets spots. This is not one of my skin problems so this shall remain unused or will be given away. This full sized 40ml bottle costs Php1499.

bdjsept11 bdjsept12

Next we have about ten sachets of Cure Natural Aqua Gel. There are a lot of raves about this exfoliator online, and I had regretted being unable to grab samples from Sampleroom, so I am actually glad to receive this bunch of samples. It claims to be a month’s supply of product, so I’m looking forward to giving this a try.  The full 250ml bottle of this costs Php1500 and can be bought from Beauty Bar. Each sachet contains at most 5ml of sample, so the total cost of the ten-pack is at most Php300.

bdjsept14 bdjsept13 bdjsept15

We have one of the top layers in the photo above next. This is Color Collection Whitening BB Cream, and I would have scoffed immediately at this since it is again targeted for whitening. It’s actually one of the reasons I didn’t get a sample of this at Sampleroom, but as I already have it I am not going to pass up the opportunity to give this a shot. This 40ml tube costs Php499 (which isn’t bad value for BB creams actually).

bdjsept07 bdjsept08 bdjsept09 bdjsept10

The next two items are from Vidal Sassoon (wow an old school brand!). The first is Vidal Sassoon Hair Treatment Mask, which takes up most of the bottom layer of the box. It’s a huge tub, containing 178ml of product, and aims to give hair the perfect dazzle and shine. While I am not against having dazzle and shine in my hair (it can certainly be improved!), I have two tubs of hair mask that I am trying to use up so it’ll be some time before I can give this a try. This tub costs Php349.

bdjsept19 bdjsept20 bdjsept21 bdjsept22

The second is Vidal Sassoon Magic Style Activator for Curl, a hair spray basically to assist in styling. Unfortunately I rarely do anything to my hair more complicated than brushing and either tying it up in a ponytail or leaving it with only a hair clip on. This is another of those items I wouldn’t be able to use. This one costs Php349 too.

bdjsept23 bdjsept24

Lastly we have Too Cool for School Emma Mini Lip Gloss. It’s a very portable gloss, and honestly seems too cute to use. It will probably join the ranks of the lipstick samples from Avon and Tellie’s mini polishes and lipsticks. This tiny 3g tube costs Php245.

bdjsept25 bdjsept26 bdjsept27

Again BDJ has this idea that vouchers are a big part of the box, but I tend to disagree. However for the sake of presentation, these vouchers are Clarity Intense Diamond Peel Voucher and Wacoal Vouchers. The first is actually a direct freebie (no purchase required), so I may go out of my way to redeem it. It has a value of Php1000. The other two are discount vouchers for specific Wacoal products, totaling a value of Php795. The only problem I have is that Wacoal bras aren’t friendly to my rather problematic bust. I’ve gotten cut and abraded skin from the wires in their bras, so I am not really that eager to try this out. I’ll probably pass this on to someone who uses Wacoal.

bdjsept31 bdjsept32

BDJ Box actually included a freebie in this box as a recompense for bumping me over to September. I chose the lipstick option (the other one was mascara, I believe) and received this Maybelline ColorSensational lipstick in the shade 135 Make Me Pink. It’s a really odd shade of pink (almost neon) and looks a little weird on my lips. I’ll put up some swatches soon.

bdjsept28 bdjsept29 bdjsept30

My impressions of the September BDJ Box: I’ve pretty much expressed what I thought of this box. I really can’t help but compare it to the other box that I might have gotten (August – Shiseido Ibuki exclusive), and clearly this one pales in comparison. I would much much rather have had the chance to try out the entire Shiseido Ibuki range, than to have received items that are not in my interest at all. Given that though, I did get some items that I am interested in trying, namely the Cure Aqua Gel and the Color Collection BB Cream.

Value review: The total value of this box is around Php3500, excluding the voucher values. This seems like a pretty great deal, considering I only paid Php580 for the subscription. Looking closer at it, the bulk of this is in the Olay serum which I am not at all interested in trying. The value of the two things I really wanted to try only comes up to Php799 which I guess is still more than the subscription price.

bdjsept34

Review: Maybelline Baby Skin Pore Eraser

Pardon the delay but I was finally able to find the time to review this item which I got last April. Maybelline Baby Skin Pore Eraser is a primer designed to make pores appear smaller. One is supposed to put this on before BB creams or foundations, and should make the face a smooth canvas for makeup application. I got this at Watsons Greenbelt 1 for Php399 (22ml).

maybskin1

When dispensed, it comes out as a clear gel-like stream.

maybskin2

One is supposed to apply this specifically on the parts of the face with obvious pores. On me, that’s on the nose and cheeks mainly. Here’s my cleansed face, nothing applied yet.

maybskin3

And a close up on my nose and cheek pores.

maybskin4

I applied a generous amount of Baby Skin Pore Eraser on my nose and cheeks. It goes on silky and settles into the pores as a smooth blanket.

maybskin5

It may not be very clear, but the pores appear blurred. Most notably the small pores near my nose are almost invisible. Unfortunately this product can’t really perform well on the larger pores, which is maybe not something it is designed to do. However, it does deliver on making a smooth canvas, and made it much easier to put on my favorite BB creams.

Definitely I would repurchase this. It is quite a good cheaper alternative to the much-vaunted Benefit Porefessional. It’s also gentle and doesn’t irritate my sensitive skin.

Pros: affordable; availability; gentle on the skin

Cons: none really!
